Pictured left to right are Leah Sealey and Catherine Bresser, two faces connected with St. Sebastian School’s Mileage Club which has been “running” for about ten years. Mileage Club came about after Leah spent some time on the Education Committee probing the school’s Health and Wellness curriculum. Leah says, “Our school is blessed to have an awesome PE program with Mary Zimmerman at the helm, but I wanted to see if kids might be interested in really moving during recess since our parking lot doesn’t offer much opportunity for large scale activities.”
Mileage Club gives students from second to fourth grade (and first grade in the spring) space to either run or walk around the block on Tuesdays and Thursdays during their lunchtime recess. The students are monitored by adult volunteers who insist that this is the “best gig ever!” How can you not be happy seeing young people running or walking with friends and meeting their fitness goals?
We always have a handful of students who run the equivalent of a Marathon during the school year–we’ve even had a couple students who have run TWO! Leah “passed the baton” to Catherine at the end of the 2016-17 school year, as her youngest child graduated in June. Leah adds, “Knowing how much the kids and volunteers love Mileage Club, I trust this program will continue for years to come.”
